John J. Garvey

President

John J. Garvey is the founder and president of Garvey Communication Associates Inc. (GCAi), a digital public relations agency whose practice centers on Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). The work answers one question: when ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, or Microsoft Copilot responds to a question about a client, is the client in the answer, and is the answer right?

Why is AI visibility a public relations problem?

Generative systems weigh sources the way an editor weighs sources, by credibility, corroboration, and independence. They favor material that other credible sources have already vouched for. That is what public relations has always produced. Earned media, executive commentary, original research, and a consistent public record are the raw material these systems draw on, which is why John argues AEO and GEO belong to PR rather than to technical SEO.

What does that work look like?

Media relations aimed at the publications AI systems actually cite. Structured content and entity consistency across a client’s website, profiles, and listings, so the machines resolve one organization instead of several. Executive thought leadership and original research that give models something specific to quote. Video and YouTube programming. Measurement of how a brand appears inside AI answers, not only in search rankings.

What does GCAi do, and for whom?

GCAi, headquartered in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, delivers strategic PR campaigns, crisis communications, reputation management, media relations, corporate video production, social media management, and paid digital on Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, and WordPress. Its clients include many of the largest employers in Western Massachusetts, across banking, insurance, healthcare, manufacturing, law, transportation, and retail. John founded the firm in 1991 and had it building client websites by 1996. Digital has never been a bolt-on here.
