Design and Development

Before the Machines

“Type used to cost money. You specced it, somebody across town set it, and it came back the next day. Get it wrong and you paid for it twice. That teaches you to decide before you commit. I still work that way.” – Seamus

As the graphic designer and web developer for Garvey Communication Associates Inc. (GCAi) – the top digital Public Relations agency in Western MA from an elevation and experience perspective – Seamus T. O’Donnell has been solving the same problem across three complete generations of tools.

He came up in eastern Massachusetts before the Macintosh existed. Paste-up boards, stat cameras, rubber cement, headline type ordered from a shop across town and picked up in an envelope. Then Los Angeles for a stretch, on brands you would recognize and that we are not going to name. Then back east, and the Berkshires, where he works now.

None of those tools survived. The judgment did. What Seamus brings to a layout is not software fluency, which anyone can rent, but forty years of knowing why a thing works before he builds it.

One Set of Hands

“Most of the arguments in this business happen at the handoff. A designer draws something, a developer decides what’s actually practical, and the client gets whatever survives the argument. I don’t have that meeting with myself.” – Seamus

Seamus does the graphic work and the WordPress development, which is an unusual pairing and a deceptively valuable one. Most designers hand off to a developer. Most developers inherit a design they quietly resent. The client pays for the gap between them, usually twice, and rarely knows it.

Because Seamus works both ends, what gets built is what got drawn. A logo that has to survive a favicon, a hero image that has to load on a phone in a parking lot, a headline that has to hold up in a search result – those are the same decision, made once, by the same person.

Built to Be Found

A website is not a brochure and has not been one for a long time. It is a machine for being found, and increasingly by something that is not a person. Answer engines and generative search read structure, markup, speed, and hierarchy before they read prose – which means the way a site is built is now inseparable from whether it gets cited.

That is where the old craft and the new mandate meet. Clean structure was always good design. It is now also good AEO. Seamus builds GCAi client sites on WordPress with both in view at once:

  • Brand identity, print, and campaign creative
  • WordPress theme development and full site builds
  • Site architecture, structured markup, and page performance
  • Ongoing maintenance and design support across the GCAi client roster

About the Name

Seamus T. O’Donnell is not his name. He has worked with GCAi since 2009, long enough that calling him a freelancer is a technicality nobody here observes, and long enough to have earned the right to stay out of the search results. So the name is invented and one or two identifying details have been blurred. Everything about the work is true, and every site on this domain is his.

When he is not at a screen he is on a bicycle or a pair of cross-country skis, and most weekends he plays bodhrán in a pub session somewhere in the hills. He is better at all three than he will admit to being.
